Discussion:
i've read about this... this is the first time i have experienced it. what do i do?

i've read about this happening on this list many times, but as it never
happened to me, i didn't pay attention to what to do to fix it.

i've been struck with the "Retrieving Folder Contents -- Please wait..."
problem: i start contact and, instead of seeing individual messages, i
see "Retrieving Folder Contents -- Please wait..." pretty much
regardless of what i do.

it seems to go away, sometimes: i can start it, sometimes, without that
message, but as soon as i move a message to a new location, or delete a
message, i get "Retrieving Folder Contents -- Please wait...".

please help! 8/

Try
$ akonadictl restart
that's it...

my understanding is that it's not a permanent fix, but will get things working
again, temporarily, correct?

Till it occurs again :). So yes, it is a temporary fix.

A reboot or logout will have same effect. IME, it will work most of the times
but sometimes it gets stuck and needs a hand to rescue itself.

Remembering that akonadi is just a cache, I have dropped the databases at
times, to get it back on its feet :D

Unfortunately you'll probably need to upgrade to the latest versions of kmail and related software. This was a problem a few years ago and it improved over time until now when its not a problem anymore. I'm not sure if its a mysql or akonadi problem but its not a kmail problem itself.

how do i upgrade an application that is not in my repositories?

for that matter, why is a deficient version of whatever software is causing
the problem part of the repository for the LTS version of the system?

You'll have to chap to you distro support for that.

there is more stupidity than hydrogen, and that is the basic

So? Don't you think 5.9.1 is new enough? I have to do this at least all 5 minutes - often more frequently when
reading mails.

5.9.1. is the version i'm on but on this login i've moved from mysql to postgresql and i no longer have the problem. i have another login where i use the same version but using mysql and that no longer has the problem either.

I have two machines with MySQL backend against an Courier IMAP server - both have these problems and
one machine with MariaDB backend against an Exchange server without these problems. However, the
accounts on Courier are quite large (~50.000 mails in private and shared folders), while the account on the
Exchange server has a lot less mails and no shared folders (not really true, but they are not accessible from
KMail).

My only outstanding issues are duplicated emails on auto-filtering, remove duplicates doesn't always work and neither does "mark thread read".
