Discussion:
With IMAP_IDLE in kmail2 is interval checking redundant?

The subject pretty much sums up my question.

I have a few IMAP accounts with google and i have them configured to check
every 5 mins. This as i understand was necessary in kmail 1 as the IMAP_IDLE
was not there.

In kmail 2 with IMAP_IDLE implemented, is it still necessary to set interval
checking?

Ps: I find that even just checking for mail consumes a lot of bandwidth (often
taking over 5 mins on all accounts) when i am using (slow) mobile broadband.
This usually makes me just put kmail in offline and manually check mail when i
am on mobile broadband. However, i do often forget to set it back to online
when i enter wifi zone.

Depends on the server.
IDLE is an IMAP extension and might not be supported by the server.
As far as I know it also required one connection per monitored mail folder.

GMail being a very commonly used service, would you know if this would work
for GMail?

Also, is "push mail" the same thing? As apparently with gmail (and an android
client) notifications only arrive on the inbox.

No idea, sorry. I heard that GMail is quite bad when it comes to correctly
advertising its capabilities (quite obviously they would prefer people to use
their web frontend).

Yes.

Ah, then this shouldn't be a problem.

I just experimented with it and yes, push mail appears to work well with
gmail. On the down side, it only works with the inbox folder and not any
others. I do not know if this is an issue with kmail, gmail or the imap
specification though. However, google's own gmail client for android also only
supports "push" notifications for inbox alone.

It's a limitation of the spec. There are various attempts at extensions to
this in the works, but nothing conclusive, atm. Only inboxes are reliably
supported.
